In this paper aspects related to the botanical characteristics of Açaí (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) are analyzed with a focus on its beneficial properties mainly related to the presence of polyphenols. The palm is found in Central and South America and it belongs to the Arecaceae family, it produces a drupe, the so-called "Açaí berry," which is dark purple in color, round in shape, and rich in antioxidants. Its high content of polyphenols such as flavonoids and anthocyanins has led to its increasing use in therapeutic field due to its ability to reduce inflammation and protect cells from the effects of ROS. Among its several properties such as gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, vasodilatory, nephroprotective and antidiabetic, this article focuses on its applications in neuroprotective and cardioprotective properties.
