Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life for terminally ill patients and their families by relieving pain and suffering through a comprehensive approach that includes physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects. Each year, more than 56.8 million people worldwide require palliative care, with 25.7 million of these patients in the last stages of life. Although often associated with cancer patients, palliative care is also increasingly relevant for those suffering from serious non-oncological diseases. Often, these patients, die in the hospital without receiving adequate end-of-life care, due to intensive and hectic hospital environments that are not optimal for such care. This is compounded by a lack of training among healthcare professionals, who struggle to recognize the needs of palliative care-eligible patients early on: insufficient training not only compromises patients' quality of life, but also leads to unnecessary hospitalizations and increased emotional difficulties for medical staff From the existing literature, a descriptive qualitative study was carried out to investigate what is the perception and experience of care and nursing of nurses in some of the AOPD's o.c. units about the field of palliative care: personal conception of palliative care, its essentiality and importance; consideration of the nurse's role in the palliative care approach; and perceptions about their own training.
