Background: The hospitalization of a child in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a traumatic event, a source of stress, and strong negative emotions. It is essential to identify the sources of stress and fears to improve the stay of both parents and the newborn within the unit, allowing for the definition of the best strategies to alleviate the emotional burden. Objective: This paper aims to identify what, according to the parents of newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Padua, are the main factors triggering anxiety and stress. Additionally, it evaluates the effectiveness of the strategies adopted to address these issues. Materials and Methods: Data collection is carried out through a validated questionnaire (PSS: NICU) administered in paper form to parents of newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with a good command of the Italian language. The questionnaire consists of 34 items divided into three clusters. Each part is evaluated using a Likert scale with values from 1 to 5 and NA. Results: The study involved 22 parents, including 12 mothers and 10 fathers. After administering the PSS: NICU questionnaire and following the statistical analysis of the data, a high level of stress was found, but no significant difference was observed between the stress levels of mothers and fathers. Both parents identified the alteration of the relationship with the newborn and their parental role as the most stressful factor. Conclusions: The results of this study do not show significant differences between the amount of stress perceived by mothers and that perceived by fathers. These results differ, in part, from those reported in previous studies, as evidenced, for example, by Kılıçlı et al. 2023, but agree with others, such as Bua et al. 2024. These discrepancies can be attributed to the limitations of the conducted study. Nevertheless, it is not a topic to be underestimated, and it is necessary to continue to preserve the mental health of parents of newborns admitted to the NICU through adequate parental support activities and involvement in the care of their child.
