BACKGROUND: Oral dysfunctional habits, such as atypical swallowing, tongue thrust, tongue sucking, tongue interposition, and altered tongue postures, represent a significant issue in orthodontics and myofunctional therapy. These dysfunctional behaviors can influence craniofacial development, dental occlusion, and overall posture, requiring specific diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. AIM: This study aims to systematically analyze oral dysfunctional habits, exploring their etiology, the anatomical and physiological characteristics involved, as well as their clinical and terminological implications. The effectiveness of myofunctional therapy as a primary tool for correcting these alterations is also evaluated. METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted by analyzing clinical and theoretical studies, using specific keywords related to oral dysfunctional habits, myofunctional therapy, and interdisciplinary approaches. The main diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies used in clinical practice were considered. RESULTS: The analysis highlighted the presence of common elements and significant differences among various oral dysfunctional habits. Atypical swallowing and tongue thrust are the most frequent dysfunctional habits and are closely related to malocclusions and craniofacial disharmonies. Myofunctional therapy has proven effective in managing these issues; however, there is a need for terminological and clinical standardization in their management. CONCLUSIONS: Oral dysfunctional habits pose a complex challenge that requires an integrated and personalized approach. Myofunctional therapy, combined with early diagnosis and interdisciplinary collaboration, can significantly improve clinical outcomes and prevent recurrences.
