This thesis aims to explore the art of shadow theatre in Eastern cultures, focusing on countries such as China, India, Indonesia, and other Asian contexts where this form of performance has deep roots. Through an analysis of the specific traditions of each country, the work will illustrate the technical and narrative features that make shadow theatre unique in each culture, highlighting the connections and mutual influences between different regions. The second part of the thesis will focus on how these traditions spread to Europe, particularly to Italy, and on the significant contribution of Maria Signorelli, an internationally renowned artist and collector. Her career and the importance of her vast collection of puppets and shadows will be analyzed, showcasing how it played a key role in preserving and promoting this ancient art form in the West. The Signorelli collection represents a cultural bridge between East and West, making possible the rediscovery and appreciation of shadow theatre in Italy.
