If we consider Italian football as an industry, its impact on the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2022 alone was 11.1 billion Euros. It is certainly not the most prolific industry in the country, but it is the one that has involved each of us at least once. This is a sector that doesn’t only concern football teams themselves, but also involves thousands of workers in various fields, especially in the TV entertainment and audiovisual sectors. This thesis aims to specifically analyze the world of football on television. In the first part, it will attempt to outline an overview of the history that links television and football in Italy, from the birth of the new medium and the first football programs to the introduction of the first matches broadcast on commercial television, and, above all, how the way viewers engage with these broadcasts has changed. Then, the focus will shift to the largest player (currently) in Italy, DAZN. The goal will be to explore its origins and how, in just a few years, it managed to acquire the entire Serie A TV rights package, challenging global giants like Sky despite its many issues. The purchase and sale of TV rights will be studied in this section from both the buyers' and sellers' perspectives, not forgetting how the final product is introduced to the market for consumers to access. Finally, attention will be given to a recurring issue in recent years: piracy. The various broadcasting models will be analyzed, such as IPTV services, and how these manage to bypass regulations and illegally broadcast entire leagues through the purchase of a “pirate subscription,” as well as how access can be obtained completely free of charge. In this case, a key role is played by various institutions, with the Minister of Sport at the forefront in the fight against a phenomenon that seems unstoppable.
