Cinema, guerra e trauma: Il Gabinetto del Dottor Caligari

The thesis aims to analyze the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari starting from its contextualization within the artistic and social panorama of Germany in the immediate aftermath of World War I. The three chapters first explore an analysis of the film's genesis and the particularities of its narrative style, then examine the expressionist characteristics that distinguish it, and finally provide an overview of the political and social contexts that clearly correlate the film with the situation of soldiers returning from the front, positioning it as a denunciation of psychiatric treatments in the military. More than just an analysis of the film, the paper seeks to demonstrate how a single film can echo the chaos and fears of an entire country and a specific historical phase.

La tesi vuole analizzare il film Il Gabinetto del Dottor Caligari a partire dalla sua contestualizzazione nel panorama artistico e sociale della Germania nell'immediato primo dopoguerra. I tre capitoli trattano prima un'analisi sulla genesi del film e la particolarità del suo stile narrativo, poi un'osservazione delle caratteristiche espressionistiche che lo contraddistinguono e infine una restituzione dei contesti politici e sociali che lo hanno chiaramente correlato alla situazione dei soldati tornati dal fronte e che lo hanno reso un film di denuncia sui trattamenti psichiatrici in campo militare. Più che un'analisi del film, l'elaborato vuole mostrare come in un singolo film possano riecheggiare il caos e le paure di un'intero Paese e di una particolare fase storica.
