The main object of the thesis is the first novel by Elsa Morante "Menzogna e sortilegio", which was published in 1948 in a neo-realist climate. The novel breaks with the patterns of the current of that time to offer the world of literature the last nineteenth-century novel. At the same time, it embodies the characteristics of the new contemporary narrative. The first chapter aims to illustrate those that are the cornerstones of nineteenth-century novel and those of modernist novel of the early twentieth century. The second chapter presents an analysis of the structural plan in terms of several fundamental aspects which find many echoes in Italian modernism. These include the use of autobiography, the role of memory, time and space for narration and narrative organization of the text. The third chapter proposes the themes that can be identified within the work, including an examination of the characteristics that denote the characters, a question relating to superstition and the mythologization of certain figures, and the use of the fabulous.
