This thesis explores the evolution of the welfare state model in Sweden, focusing on how it has been influenced by and has influenced various socio-political and economic factors. The analysis centers on the intersection between welfare policies and the dynamics of gender, class, and public governance. Through a thorough historical and comparative investigation, it is demonstrated how the Swedish welfare state has maintained a solid base of popular support despite challenges posed by contemporary phenomena such as immigration and neoliberal reforms. Particular attention is paid to the role of gender policies, which have shaped a universal support system by actively promoting gender equality through initiatives such as shared parental leave and childcare services. The thesis highlights the importance of balancing centralization and decentralization in administration and underscores the need for effective public management to meet the specific needs of local communities. The Swedish case provides crucial insights into how welfare states can adapt to continually evolving socio-economic contexts while maintaining a commitment to social justice and equity.
