In recent decades, the topic of fatherhood has gained increasing importance in scientific research, a phenomenon that had been overlooked until a few years ago, as the mother was considered the central figure in caregiving. In this context, there is a growing need to explore the dynamics of "new fathers," with particular attention to those who are parents of children with disabilities. While the role of fathers has changed, fathers of children with disabilities remain a "sub-category" that is still underexplored. This research aims to investigate, through a qualitative approach and the use of semi-structured interviews, the lived experiences of fathers of children with disabilities, to understand their experiences, daily challenges, and psychological resources involved. The research also includes a reflection on the transformation of the paternal role in contemporary society, influenced by concepts such as the "evaporation of the father" and the "maternal father." Furthermore, emotional and familial dynamics are explored, highlighting how the child’s disability may complicate the maintenance of a separation between parental roles and lead fathers to develop a relationship more akin to that of a mother. The results show that although fathers of children with disabilities are more involved in caregiving, their emotional experiences and reflections on the experience often differ from those of their partners/wives. Narrative, moreover, has proven to be a powerful tool in facilitating the exploration of emotions and providing psychological support, offering these fathers an opportunity for personal growth and empowerment. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the father's role in caring for a child with a disability and emphasizes the importance of non-clinical listening spaces where fathers can reflect on their experiences and develop new perspectives for adaptation and hope.

Abstract
This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the father's role in caring for a child with a disability and emphasizes the importance of non-clinical listening spaces where fathers can reflect on their experiences and develop new perspectives for adaptation and hope.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
