Background: Gastroschisis is a rare congenital defect of the abdominal wall, which today is diagnosed during prenatal ultrasound screening. In this context, it is essential to identify the characteristics of the malformation in order to predict the degree of complexity of the condition, to plan the timing and type of delivery, and to develop an appropriate therapeutic plan in order to reduce complications. Objectives: The aim of this observational study is to analyse the association between prenatal parameters and postnatal outcome in neonates affected by gastroschisis. Methods: All cases of gastroschisis treated at Ca' Foncello Hospital in Treviso, from the prenatal period to post-surgical follow-up visits, were considered. Results: Nine cases were treated during the period 2014-2024. The results show a possible correlation between marked or absent dilation of the intra- and extra abdominal loops, the evolution during prenatal follow up, the evanescent appearance of the herniated viscera, and poorer outcomes in terms of long-term complications, length of hospital stay, and period of dependence on total parenteral nutrition. Conclusions: This information could be used for future prenatal counselling and the formulation of the prognosis, that sonographers, pediatric surgeons, and neonatologists provide whenever this defect is present in a fetus.
