After a brief introduction to the use of solid propellants in the aeronautical and astronautical fields, their behavior is analyzed from a physical perspective. The main compositions are then discussed, describing the energetic materials and their characteristics. Subsequently, the differences between single-base, double-base, and composite solid propellants are examined, addressing their composition and comparing them. An engineering section on rocket engines is included, studying the evolution of key parameters during the combustion of the analyzed propellants and how to control them. The paper concludes with a study on environmental impact through a discussion of an LCA analysis conducted by ESA.
Dopo una breve introduzione all’utilizzo dei propellenti solidi in ambito aeronautico e astronautico, si analizza il loro comportamento da un punto di vista fisico. Si discute poi delle principali composizioni, descrivendo i materiali energetici e le loro caratteristiche. Successivamente si analizzano le differenze tra propellenti solidi single-base, double-base e compositi, trattando della loro composizione e confrontandoli. È proposta una parentesi ingegneristica sui motori a razzo, studiando l’andamento dei parametri più importanti durante la combustione dei propellenti trattati, e su come controllarli. Conclude l'elaborato uno studio dell’impatto ambientale mediante una discussione su un'analisi LCA prodotta dall’ESA.
