The aim of this thesis is a contribution with a series of information on the tanning activity in Roman age. Starting from clothing, leather and furs were mainly used to cover themselves from the cold, the attention expands to the production chain that starts from the location of the site, from the supply of raw materials to the creation of the finished product. Both literary sources, epigraphs and chronological evidence were examined. The chronological period analyzed is that of the Roman and Late Antiquity periods, in the geographical context that starts from the Italian peninsula to the Roman provinces. The craftsmanship of leather in the ancient world remains little known, there are texts that deal with the products used for tanning, but few deal with the different stages of processing the process of transforming raw leather into a finished product, leather. The ethnoarchaeological aspects of the populations that still practice a type of tanning process as in the past were also examined, and the places in Roman times of the production chain both in the Italian peninsula and in the Roman provinces.
