Tra arte e mitologia: La rappresentazione artistica dei miti musicali ne Le Metamorfosi di Ovidio

The argument of the thesis is Ovid's Metamorphoses and the extraordinary influence this work has had on the artistic and literary fields. More specifically, the focus is on the musical myths and some of the painting inspired by them (which are analyzed from the iconographic, iconological and organological perspectives, also collocating them in their historical context). The analysis of each painting will not be conducted only from an art historian's perspective. My contribution will be to integrate the organological point of view, an aspect that is often, and unfortunately, underestimated. I believe it is very interesting to compare the various works and observe how even a 'simple flute' can actually tell us a lot of things about a historical and cultural context An interesting example that emerge is the 'mythical challenges' theme, trough which we can fully understand the eternal struggle between rationality and passion, between the immeasurable divine power and the immense yet fragile mortal pride. By comparing various texts, studies and works of art, the purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate how music in Ovidian myths is not just an artistic subject, but also a symbol of transformation and divine power. The primary goal is to highlight how, in different eras, the same theme can be represented in completely different ways, especially regarding musical instruments that artists often choose to 'modernize' according to their time. It is also shown how important the analysis of a musical iconographer is in fully understanding a work of art and the historical, geographical, and cultural context in which it was painted.

Il tema esplorato nella tesi è quello de Le Metamorfosi di Ovidio e della straordinaria influenza che quest’opera ha esercitato nel campo artistico, oltre che letterario. Più precisamente vengono approfonditi alcuni dei miti musicali presenti al suo interno, prendendo in esame alcune opere d’arte e analizzandole dal punto di vista iconografico, iconologico e organologico, collocandole all’interno del loro contesto storico. L'analisi di ciascuna opera non verrà svolta solamente dal punto di vista di uno storico dell'arte. Il mio contributo sarà quello di integrare anche il punto di vista organologico, un aspetto che spesso e purtroppo viene sottovalutato. Penso che sia molto interessante rapportare le varie opere tra loro e osservare quanto anche un "semplicissimo flauto" possa in realtà raccontarci di un contesto storico e culturale. Tra i vari temi presenti è emerso quello delle “disfide mitiche”, grazie al quale si riesce a cogliere perfettamente l’avvincente lotta tra razionalità e passione, tra lo scommensurato potere divino e l’enorme quanto fragile orgoglio mortale. Mettendo a confronto diversi testi, studi ed opere d’arte, l’obiettivo della tesi è quello di dimostrare come la musica presente nei miti ovidiani non sia solamente un soggetto artistico, bensì anche un simbolo di trasformazione e potere divino. Lo scopo primario è quello di sottolineare come, in epoche diverse, uno stesso tema possa essere rappresentato in modi completamente differenti. Con abiti, paesaggi e soprattutto strumenti musicali che spesso gli artisti decidono di “modernizzare” in base alla propria epoca. Viene dimostrato inoltre quanto l’analisi di un iconografo musicale sia importante per comprendere in modo completo un’opera d’arte ed il contesto storico, geografico e culturale in cui è stata dipinta.
