This thesis analyses the retrospective exhibition dedicated to Helen Frankenthaler hosted at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence from 27 September 2024 to 26 January 2025, a significant event that retraced the American painter's artistic journey from the 1950s to the early 2000s. The exhibition highlighted the evolution of her style, focusing in particular on the innovative technique of soak stain, which revolutionised the world of abstract painting. The exhibition also explored the relationship between Frankenthaler and other contemporary artists, many of them his friends, such as Jackson Pollock, David Smith and Robert Motherwell, analysing mutual influences and the dynamics of a shared art scene. Through a critical analysis of the curatorial and exhibition design choices, this paper aims to highlight how the exhibition succeeded in conveying the lasting impact of Frankenthaler's art in a dynamic and innovative way.
