In this thesis I have retraced, through various volumes including "The development of the Italian fashion system" by Cinzia Capalbo and "Institutions for fashion" by Gianluigi Di Giangirolamo, the development of the fashion system in France and Italy and I have analyzed the main stages of the success of the brands of two icons of fashion world, Coco Chanel and Miuccia Prada, researching in their evolution the main traits of their relationships with the cultural and structural characteristics of the system itself. I will tell the story of the birth and success of Coco Chanel and Miuccia Prada through their respective biographies: "Coco Chanel, la biografia" by Henry Gidel and "Vita Prada" by Gian Luigi Paracchini and I will analyze how their innovations have brought changes to the social culture of fashion and vice versa how their stories may have been influenced by some characteristics of the system. My choice falls on these designers for their great influence certainly but also for the way they have created fashion during their career. Both in fact have put the expression of their tastes and their ideas first as an expression of their soul: Chanel intercepting the evolution of taste between the two wars giving life to her own language, accompanying the social evolution of women in an era of great changes and Miuccia Prada creating a style opposed to stereotypes that rejects the limits to intellectual freedom by not accepting pre-established limits by continually uniting opposites to create something new.
