This paper will examine the concept of linguistic competence, specifically in relation to the epistemological debate surrounding the notions of knowing-how and knowing-that. Through the analysis and interpretation of the positions of Noam Chomsky, David Lewis, Timothy Williamson, Jason Stanley and David Balcarras, a theoretical synthesis will be reached. Subsequently, a reading of language competence as a particular form of knowing-how will ultimately be provided. Lastly, the idea of impossible language and alien language will be explored, with the aim of identifying which limits - biological, practical, epistemological - challenge human linguistic competence.

Abstract
This paper will examine the concept of linguistic competence, specifically in relation to the epistemological debate surrounding the notions of knowing-how and knowing-that. Through the analysis and interpretation of the positions of Noam Chomsky, David Lewis, Timothy Williamson, Jason Stanley and David Balcarras, a theoretical synthesis will be reached. Subsequently, a reading of language competence as a particular form of knowing-how will ultimately be provided. Lastly, the idea of impossible language and alien language will be explored, with the aim of identifying which limits - biological, practical, epistemological - challenge human linguistic competence.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
