This thesis explores the cultural geography of Montreal, analysing its multicultural landscape and the role of ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity in shaping its urban identity, with a specific focus on the Italian-Canadian community. Through an investigation of ethnic neighborhoods and cultural streets, the research highlights how immigrant communities have contributed to shaping the city’s architecture, toponyms, and public spaces. Furthermore, it examines the relationship between cultural diversity and urban heritage, emphasizing the dialogue between dominant cultures and minority groups. The study reflects on the importance of intercultural interaction and the impact of migration on social cohesion, offering an integrated interpretation of Montreal’s multicultural landscape as a key element for understanding contemporary cultural geography.
Questa tesi esplora la geografia culturale di Montréal, analizzando il suo paesaggio multiculturale ed il ruolo delle diversità etniche, linguistiche e religiose nella definizione della sua identità urbana, con un mirato focus sulla comunità italo-canadese. Attraverso un’indagine sui quartieri etnici e sulle strade culturali la ricerca mette in luce come le diverse comunità immigrate abbiano contribuito a plasmare l’architettura, i toponimi e gli spazi pubblici della città. Si esamina inoltre il rapporto tra la diversità culturale ed il patrimonio urbano, evidenziando il dialogo tra culture dominanti e minoranze. Il lavoro riflette sull’importanza dell’interazione interculturale e sull’impatto della migrazione sulla coesione sociale, proponendo una lettura integrata del tessuto multiculturale di Montréal come elemento chiave per comprendere la geografia culturale contemporanea.
