This thesis examines the phenomenon of gentrification through a theoretical analysis of its origins, causes, and consequences, focusing on the case of the Madrid neighborhood of Lavapiés. Traditionally considered a popular and multicultural barrio (neighborhood), Lavapiés has now become one of the symbols of urban gentrification in Madrid. The study delves into the role of the Plan General de Ordenación Urbana de Madrid (PGOUM) of 1997, initially designed to improve housing and infrastructure conditions but which ultimately contributed to processes of commodification, touristification, and the displacement of local residents. At the same time, the thesis explores the forms of urban resistance that have emerged in response to these transformations, from social mobilization to community activism, highlighting local initiatives aimed at preserving the neighborhood’s identity and social cohesion. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the research reflects on the implications of gentrification and the right to the city, questioning more equitable and sustainable urban development models.

Abstract
Through an interdisciplinary approach, the research reflects on the implications of gentrification and the right to the city, questioning more equitable and sustainable urban development models.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
