The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the reworking of the historical period known as the Middle Ages within different currents of the Heavy Metal music genre. The analysis will begin with an explanation of the phenomenon of medievalism, the re-presentation of the Middle Ages in different types of media, often aimed at giving it a particular political and social significance. Often based on false myths, the portrayal of the Middle Ages depicts it as a dark age, or conversely, as a period prior to the massification of modern society. The analysis then proceeds with an explanation of how the birth of the modern fantasy genre is intertwined with the study of medieval history, with which it shares a common ethical thought. What is now called fantasy Neomedievalism proves be the main theme of the Heavy Metal current known as Power Metal, which combines the typical sound of Metal music with baroque-like orchestrations. The construction of a real saga within the first five albums of the Italian band Rhapsody of Fire will be analysed, showing how it delineates a medieval narrative and Weltanschaung. The birth of the genre known as Black Metal will then be explained. The most extreme among the Heavy Metal subgenres developed in Norway in the mid-1980s. Its anti-Christian and violent character led to acts of vandalism that gained wide media exposure. The relevance of the Scandinavian Pagan Middle Ages to various Black Metal bands will be described showing how it fits into its ideological construction.
