The thesis investigates the literary representation of the urban periphery through the analysis of two texts: Ragazzi di vita (1955) by Pier Paolo Pasolini and Cronache dall'asfalto (2005) by Samuel Benchetrit. Ragazzi di vita focuses on the Roman suburb of the second post-war period, while the geographical context in which Cronache dall'asfalto is set is the Parisian banlieue. Although the two texts are far apart in their historical and cultural context, their comparison makes it possible to highlight, in different ways depending on the case, certain aspects of the periphery and its novel’s depiction. After an initial sociological framing of the periphery, highlighting its characteristics and trying to provide a definition, the thesis focuses on its growing importance as a literary theme. In the following chapters is proposed a close analysis of the novels, portrayed in their specific context. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between writers and the outskirts, the stylistic options through which the suburb is represented and the description of the characters within the two works. Finally, the conclusions propose a comparison between the texts, aimed at highlighting similarities and differences, and present some useful considerations for an overall evaluation of the literary periphery starting from the two books examined.

Abstract
Finally, the conclusions propose a comparison between the texts, aimed at highlighting similarities and differences, and present some useful considerations for an overall evaluation of the literary periphery starting from the two books examined.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
