The main theme I wish to focus on in my thesis is the rite of passage, particularly the theoretical and pragmatic connections between anthropology and theatre, which can be identified when analyzing the phenomenon of the rite of passage, both as a "social drama" on one hand, and as an artistic theatrical representation on the other. Through a comparative and multidisciplinary analysis, I will consider the work of anthropologists Victor Turner and Arnold Van Gennep to investigate the ritual dimension in its main characteristics: "liminality," the representation of the individual and the reality, its performative, "anti-structural," and creative nature, the relationship between performer and audience, and the value of the ritual within the culture and social organization of a community. These thematic connections will also be explored through an anthropological field study on the Venetian Carnival, as well as an interview with choreographer and performer Francesco Marilungo, who, for the creation of his performance Stuporosa (2024), was inspired by Ernesto de Martino's work "Morte e pianto rituale. To understand how a rite of passage can become a performative artistic device, I intend to primarily focus on the unsettling "performance art" of the 1970s, particularly that of Marina Abramović, who embodied her concept of the artist as a mirror of society, and of art as a communal ritual, through a re-semantization of Western cultural values and her Balkan origins. The theme of death, fundamental in the anthropological discussion around the rite of passage and in Abramović's "transformative" art, is also present in Marilungo's works and in the performance "Carmen" (2024) by my performative collective Primo Amore. Alongside the thesis, I may also conceive an original performative act to be presented during the exam. This small performance could draw inspiration from the rituals of non-Western populations and involve objects, as well as the participation of the audience, who will evaluate or witness the exam, in order to bring my theoretical and performative research into a practical and concrete context.
