What thoughts can be triggered in a child's mind when he sees a person with a different skin color? What feelings and emotions can he experience? What reactions can occur? The aim of this thesis is to investigate the perception that children have of otherness through skin colour, through the analysis of short textual productions developed by primary school pupils in the Veneto region. Students were asked to describe what their reaction would be to a hypothetical change in the skin color of their classmates. As a focus, we will investigate the identity construct that emerges from children's writings. The color of the skin can in fact be one of the main elements with which we are often led to establish our similarity or difference with other people, and on the basis of which we often attribute specific characteristics or traits to those who possess it. The investigation is inspired by Paola Tabet's 1997 research, which revealed a concept full of stereotypes and prejudices, as well as a perception of other people's identities closely linked to the color of their skin. In almost thirty years the Italian socio-cultural context has changed: multiculturalism is today a distinctive feature. The question we ask ourselves is therefore the following: thirty years later, will the results we obtain be similar or different from Paola Tabet's investigation? Understanding the most authentic children’s point of view becomes fundamental to promoting an intercultural project that truly educates.
Quali pensieri si possono innescare nella mente di un bambino quando vede una persona con la pelle di un colore diverso dal proprio? Quali sentimenti ed emozioni può provare? Quali reazioni si possono manifestare? Lo scopo di questa tesi è indagare la percezione che i bambini hanno dell’alterità attraverso il colore della pelle, mediante l’analisi di brevi produzioni testuali elaborate dagli alunni delle Scuole Primarie del Veneto. Agli studenti è stato richiesto di descrivere quale sarebbe stata la loro reazione ad un ipotetico cambio di colore della pelle dei propri compagni di classe. Il focus sarà dunque indagare il costrutto di identità che emerge dagli scritti dei bambini. Il colore della pelle può essere infatti uno degli elementi principali con cui spesso siamo portati a stabilire la nostra somiglianza o differenza con altre persone, e sulla base del quale attribuiamo spesso caratteristiche o tratti specifici. L’indagine si ispira alla ricerca di Paola Tabet del 1997, dalla quale emerse una concezione ricca di stereotipi e pregiudizi, oltre ad una percezione dell’identità dell’altro strettamente legata al colore della sua pelle. In quasi trent’anni il contesto socio-culturale italiano è cambiato: la multiculturalità ne è oggi un tratto distintivo. La domanda che ci poniamo è dunque la seguente: a distanza di trent’anni, i risultati che otterremo saranno simili oppure saranno differenti dall’indagine di Paola Tabet? Comprendere il più autentico punto di vista dei bambini diventa fondamentale per poter promuovere un progetto interculturale che sappia realmente educare.
