Anticlericalismo e Religione nel Messico del XX secolo. Il caso de "Il Potere e la Gloria" di Graham Greene

This thesis explores Mexican anticlericalism through a historical and literary overview, focusing on the period from the Mexican Revolution to the end of the Cristero War. In this context, it analyzes the significant events that marked the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Mexican state including the religious repression during Calles' presidency and the outbreak of the Cristero War. Through the analysis of Graham Greene's figure and his novel The Power and the Glory, this thesis explores the ways in which the English writer addresses the theme of the conflict between faith, power, and religious authority, highlighting the contradictions of the Catholic Church and its political implications in Mexico. The censorship imposed by the Church on Greene and the influence this had on the dissemination of the work are also subjects of reflection. Lastly, the thesis examines the effects of this historical period on contemporary clericalism in Mexico, analyzing how political and religious dynamics have influenced the long-term evolution of Mexican society.

La presente tesi esplora l’anticlericalismo messicano attraverso una panoramica storica e letteraria, concentrandosi sul periodo che va dalla Rivoluzione messicana alla fine della Cristiada. In questo contesto, si analizzano gli eventi significativi che hanno plasmato la relazione tra le Chiese cattolica e lo stato messicano, tra cui la repressione religiosa durante la presidenza di Plutarco Elías Calles e l’insorgere della guerra cristera. Attraverso l’analisi della figura di Graham Greene e del suo romanzo “Potere e Gloria”, si esplorano le modalità con cui lo scrittore inglese affronta il tema del conflitto tra fede, potere e autorità religiosa, mettono in luce le contraddizioni della Chiesa cattolica e le sue implicazioni politiche in Messico. La censura imposta dalla Chiesa a Greene e l’influenza che questa ha avuto sulla diffusione dell’opera sono anch’essi oggetto di riflessione. Infine, la tesi esamina gli effetti di questo periodo storico sul clericalismo contemporaneo in Messico, analizzando come le dinamiche politiche e religiose abbiano influenzato l’evoluzione della società messicana nel lungo periodo.
