This thesis examines the influence of colonial legacy on integration policies in France and Italy, comparing their approaches to immigration. Through a comparative analysis, the study explores how different colonial experiences have shaped integration strategies and contemporary social dynamics in both countries. The research is structured into three chapters, corresponding to the three generations of immigrants. The first chapter examines the historical impact of colonization on the first generation, comparing the French assimilation model with Italy’s fragmented approach. The second chapter analyzes integration policies for the second generation, focusing on education, employment, and cultural identity, highlighting the contrasts between French republican universalism and Italian decentralization. The third chapter addresses the challenges and future perspectives for the third generation, considering recent legislative reforms and public debates on social inclusion. The analysis shows how colonial history has influenced not only migration policies but also cultural and identity perceptions in both countries. In France, the assimilationist model has promoted cultural uniformity, whereas in Italy, the decentralized approach reflects the country’s historical complexities. The thesis concludes by emphasizing the need for more inclusive integration policies that take into account historical legacies and contemporary social transformations.
