The thesis aims to retrace the most noteworthy stages that led to the formation of the Maastricht Treaty. It will begin with a general overview of the economic and social situation in the post-war period, followed by a more in-depth examination of the agreements and treaties that states entered into to strengthen their ties and form an increasingly powerful alliance. Subsequently, the Maastricht Treaty will be analysed in detail, along with the consequences and improvements it led to. Finally, the practical case of Germany will be studied, with particular attention given to the changes that occurred in the country as a result of the Treaty and to how the German state managed to balance sovereignty with European integration.
