This thesis analyses the thought of Jawdat Said, a Syrian intellectual and theologian, known for his vision of social change based on non-violence and the concept of justice according to Islamic tradition. In a historical and political context marked by conflict and repression, Said proposes an alternative path, inspired by the ethical and moral values of Islam, which rejects the use of force as a means of changing society. Through his interpretation of the Quran, he emphasises the importance of knowledge, individual responsibility and dialogue as fundamental tools for change. The thesis describes Jawdat Said's life and thought, highlighting the influences of other thinkers from the Islamic world and beyond on his intellectual formation. Furthermore, it analyses one of his works in Arabic, not yet known to Western audiences, entitled ‘Why all this phobia towards Islam and how did the fear begin?!’. Particular attention is given to the concept of justice in the Islamic tradition, whose most significant meanings and ideas of the most influential Muslim thinkers are explored; and to the way Said interprets the concept of jihad, which marginalises the use of force by giving greater importance to personal commitment to truth and justice. The aim of this thesis is to highlight how Islam is open to dialogue and is compatible with Western culture, where Jawdat Said's vision represents a concrete and peaceful proposal to address the crises in the Arab-Islamic world, offering an alternative to extremism and a way to a more just and inclusive society.
