RESPIRARE VELENO. STORIA DEL DISASTRO SANITARIO, AMBIENTALE E UMANO A PORTO MARGHERA

This paper aims to analyze the severe health, environmental, and social consequences arising from the activities of the petrochemical complex in Porto Marghera, with particular focus on exposure to Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM), a highly toxic and carcinogenic substance that has had devastating effects on the health of workers. Since the 1960s, the use of VCM in the production of plastics and other materials has led to a significant increase in diseases among workers, including cancers and respiratory conditions, resulting in a high rate of premature mortality. The paper will explore the key stages of this disaster, starting with the documentation of the first cases of illness among workers and continuing with the judicial and public investigations that sought to clarify corporate responsibilities. It will also examine the mobilization of trade unions and victims to secure recognition of the damage suffered and compensation for those affected. Additionally, the role of journalistic investigations will be analyzed, as they played a crucial part in raising public awareness about the severe health and environmental implications of the case. The analysis will also consider the long-term impact on the health of the surrounding population and the environmental consequences stemming from the industrial practices of the chemical complex. Finally, the paper will address the ongoing repercussions of the case, examining health and environmental protection policies, as well as the measures implemented to prevent the recurrence of similar tragedies in high-risk industrial contexts.

Il presente elaborato si propone di analizzare il disastro sanitario, ambientale e umano derivante dall'attività del polo petrolchimico di Porto Marghera, con particolare attenzione all'esposizione al Cloruro di Vinile Monomero (CVM), una sostanza altamente tossica e cancerogena, la quale ha avuto conseguenze devastanti sulla salute dei lavoratori. A partire dagli anni Sessanta, l'uso del CVM nella produzione di plastiche e altri materiali ha portato a un significativo incremento delle malattie tra gli operai, inclusi tumori e patologie respiratorie, contribuendo a un elevato tasso di mortalità prematura. L'elaborato si propone di esplorare le fasi principali di questo disastro, iniziando dalla registrazione dei primi casi di malattia tra i lavoratori e proseguendo con le indagini giudiziarie e pubbliche che hanno cercato di chiarire le responsabilità aziendali. Si analizzerà, inoltre, la mobilitazione di sindacati e vittime per il riconoscimento dei danni subiti e il risarcimento delle persone colpite. Si esamineranno anche le inchieste giornalistiche che hanno rivestito un ruolo cruciale nel sensibilizzare l'opinione pubblica riguardo alle gravi implicazioni sanitarie e ambientali del caso. L'analisi considererà, altresì, l'impatto a lungo termine sulla salute della popolazione residente nelle aree circostanti e le conseguenze ambientali derivanti dalle pratiche industriali del polo chimico. Vengono infine trattate le ricadute attuali della vicenda, esaminando le politiche di tutela della salute e dell'ambiente ed le misure adottate per prevenire il ripetersi di simili tragedie in contesti industriali a rischio.
