The thesis aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of the assassination of Orlando Letelier, former Chilean ambassador to the United States, which took place in Washington D.C. in 1976. This episode is particularly emblematic of Operation Condor, a network of collaboration among South American military dictatorships, as well as of the direct or indirect involvement of the United States. The research will draw on declassified documents, analyses of primary and secondary sources, and academic studies in order to reconstruct the events and assess their political, diplomatic, and judicial impact. The assassination of Orlando Letelier acted as a catalyst, exposing the brutality of authoritarian regimes in Latin America and the complex dynamics of U.S. foreign policy in the region. The primary objective is to demonstrate that, although not the only act of political violence during that period, the Letelier assassination had an unprecedented impact—greater than other Latin American episodes—due to a unique combination of factors: its bold execution in the heart of the U.S. capital, the subsequent declassification of key documents that revealed the mechanisms of Operation Condor and the ambiguous role of the United States, and the political and diplomatic consequences that ensued, culminating in the deterioration of relations between the United States and Pinochet’s Chile.

Abstract
The primary objective is to demonstrate that, although not the only act of political violence during that period, the Letelier assassination had an unprecedented impact—greater than other Latin American episodes—due to a unique combination of factors: its bold execution in the heart of the U.S. capital, the subsequent declassification of key documents that revealed the mechanisms of Operation Condor and the ambiguous role of the United States, and the political and diplomatic consequences that ensued, culminating in the deterioration of relations between the United States and Pinochet’s Chile.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
