This study investigates the figure of the Paduan bishop and humanist Pietro Donato (1390–1447), owner of one of the most significant private libraries of the early fifteenth century. A central actor within the reformist milieu of the early Quattrocento, Donato played an active role at the Council of Basel, during which he also commissioned several manuscript codices. The present work aims to reconstruct an ideal library of the prelate, drawing on the material evidence provided by the inventory rediscovered by Paolo Sambin in 1959. Given that the manuscripts—although intended, according to Donato’s testamentary dispositions, to remain in the Charterhouse of Padua founded by him—underwent an early dispersal, the analysis will focus on those volumes that have been traced to date. From this corpus, stylistic and thematic observations will be drawn, with the ultimate goal of shedding light on the cultural interests and aesthetic sensibilities of the patron.

Abstract
This study investigates the figure of the Paduan bishop and humanist Pietro Donato (1390–1447), owner of one of the most significant private libraries of the early fifteenth century.
