This thesis aims to explore the presence of Leopardi’s poetics in 20th-century prose, challenging the many stereotypes that still surround the figure of Giacomo Leopardi today. The first chapter focuses on this topic, showing how Leopardi’s thought influenced not only poets but also prose writers and philosophers throughout the Italian 20th century. More specifically, the study aspires to highlight the importance of the moon in the writings of the poet, this theme would go on to influence later Italian literature. This is the focus of the second chapter. To do so, the chapter first reviews the history and literary features of the moon as a theme and then analyses how Leopardi’s "lunar poetics" influenced authors such as Pavese, Buzzati, and Calvino. The third chapter is entirely dedicated to Tommaso Landolfi, a 20th-century writer whose biographical and literary connections with Leopardi are explored. In particular, it examines how the moon appears in Landolfi’s works, with special attention to his prose work La pietra lunare, and the role it plays in the dialogue between Leopardi and the 20th century experienced by Landolfi.
