LE POUVOIR DU SILENCE : Analyse de la figure paternelle dans le roman d’Alexandre Najjar Le Silence du Ténor Une enfance libanaise

This thesis focuses on the analysis of the novel The power of Silence, of the French-Lebanese writer Alexandre Najjar. At the age of only eight, Najjar grows up surrounded by the civil war of 1975-1990 in Lebanon. The Silence of the Tenor is a novel published in 2006, organized in 23 chapters, each one dedicated to a memory of the past, be it related to friends, family, childhood or adolescence. It also describes the horrors of the civil war. The narrative focus is on the close but conflicting ties between him and his father, nicknamed the Tenor: a demanding father and lawyer with a difficult character, very serious, presented as a symbol of strength and courage. Unfortunately, the tenor's life is put to the test when, due to a heart attack, he becomes disabled and aphasic. The father's silence plays a fundamental role in the novel and acquires, according to the narrative, different meanings. Firstly, it represents the physical condition of the father's illness. Secondly, before his illness, the tenor used silence as an educational tool or, on the contrary, when he was overcome by emotion, unable to show his affectionate side, he remained silent. Finally, silence represents above all, the historical context of Lebanon, devastated by the wars that still determine its fragility today. This muteness could symbolize the silence of the oppressed Lebanese, the indifference of European countries to the horrors that the Lebanese population was experiencing, or a silent resistance on the part of the people. The end of the civil war came in 1990 and the Lebanese believed they were living in a time of peace but in 2006 another war broke out and their hopes for a peaceful future were ruined. Alexandre finds himself in his parents' country house and thinks back to the past, finding hope in a powerful symbol: the cedar tree planted by his father at his birth, which survives all the bombings. This last passage is crucial because it shows the optimism with which Alexandre wants to end his novel. It represents the resilience and strength of the Lebanese to resist and hope for a better future. Through this novel of universal relevance, Najjar invites us to believe in values such as love, peace and the fight against inequalities and to look to the future with hope and optimism, inspired by the cedar tree itself.

La tesi verte sull’analisi del romanzo Il silenzio del tenore, un’infanzia libanese dello scrittore franco-libanese Alexandre Najjar. All’età di soli 8 anni, Najjar cresce circondato dalla guerra civile degli anni 1975-1990, in Libano. Il silenzio del tenore è un romanzo pubblicato nel 2006, organizzato in 23 capitoli, ciascuno dedicato a un ricordo del passato, sia questo legato agli amici, alla famiglia, all’infanzia o all’adolescenza. Altresì racconta gli orrori della guerra civile. Il fulcro narrativo è legame stretto ma conflittuale tra lui e suo padre, soprannominato il tenore: padre e avvocato esigente e dal carattere difficile, molto serio, presentato come un simbolo di forza e di coraggio. Purtroppo la vita del tenore è messa a dura prova quando, a causa di un attacco cardiaco, diventa disabile e afasico. Il silenzio del padre ha un ruolo fondamentale nel romanzo e acquisisce secondo la narrazione, dei significati differenti. In primo luogo, rappresenta la condizione fisica di malattia del padre. In secondo luogo, prima della malattia, il tenore utilizzava il silenzio come strumento educativo o al contrario quando era colto dall’emozione, incapace dimostrare il suo lato affettuoso, restava in silenzio. Infine, il silenzio rappresenta soprattutto il contesto storico del libano, devastato dalle guerre che ancora oggi ne determinano la fragilità. Questo mutismo potrebbe simboleggiare il silenzio dei libanesi oppressi, l’indifferenza dei paesi europei di fronte agli orrori che stava vivendo la popolazione libanese o una resistenza silenziosa da parte del popolo. La fine della guerra civile arriva nel 1990 e i libanesi credono di vivere in un momento di pace ma nel 2006 un’altra guerra scoppia e le loro speranze in un futuro di pace, vengono meno. Alexandre si ritrova nella casa in campagna dei suoi genitori e ripensa al passato, ritrovando speranza in un simbolo potente: il cedro che, piantato da suo padre alla sua nascita, sopravvive a tutti i bombardamenti. Quest’ ultimo passaggio è fondamentale perché mostra l’ottimismo con il quale Alexandre vuole terminare il suo romanzo. Esso rappresenta la resilienza e la forza dei libanesi a resistere e a sperare in un futuro migliore. Grazie a questo romanzo di portata universale, Najjar ci invita a credere nei valori quali l’amore, la pace e la lotta contro le diseguaglianze e guardare al futuro con speranza e ottimismo, ispirandosi proprio al cedro.
