The aim of this thesis is to analyse capoeira as an expression of resistance, identity and cultural heritage of Afro-descendant populations in Brazil, from the period of colonial slavery until today. In the first chapter, the historical picture of Portuguese colonization and the Atlantic slave trade is reconstructed, deepening their living conditions, forced labour in Brazilian plantations and the first forms of resistance. In this context takes shape the capoeira, initially practiced clandestinely and later recognized as cultural heritage. The second chapter is dedicated to the study of capoeira identity. It will try to reconstruct the origins and traditions of the African populations deported to the Brazilian territory and highlight the role that dances, rituals, struggles and spiritual practices had in the formation of this art. In the third chapter, we delve into the most relevant theme of the thesis, that of the musical dimension of capoeira. The role of music and songs during the roda, the different types of singing and the instruments used are analysed. Explores the theme of oral transmission and tradition as a form of continuity of Afro-Brazilian collective memory. Finally, the fourth chapter is dedicated to capoeira in contemporaneity, its global diffusion and especially its use as an educational and social tool. For this part of the research, interviews with capoeira teachers are also presented, aiming to better understand how the practice of capoeira today can be interpreted as a means of inclusion, community and social transformation and cultural valorization.
