This thesis examines a key character in Saramago’s narrative corpus, namely the doctor's wife in Blindness, with the aim of demonstrating her importance and analyzing her role within the novel-essay published in Portugal in 1995. The thesis is divided into three parts: the first focuses on the author's life, poetics, and Nobel Prize; the second on the plot, the orality of his style, and the new phase of his body of work that begins precisely with Blindness (the turning point in Saramago’s prose marked by the transition "from the statue to the stone"); the third part is entirely dedicated to the redemptive and heroic role of the doctor's wife. This final section represents an attempt to interpret her character, which is essential for understanding the novel and necessary for approaching the message conveyed by the author.
