Il tributo locrese ad Ilio: storia e ritualità

The present dissertation aims to investigate the main problems about the tribute of two virgins that the old-world Locrians owed to the temple of Athena at Ilion. After an analysis of the ancient sources which testify this practice, a historical reconstruction of the tribute is attempted, with a particular interest in the annuality of the sending of the virgins and the dates of its beginning, interruption and cessation. Finally, the last section of the work deals with the interpretation of the ritual, which varies between the one of a rite of the pharmakos and the one of a rite of passage.

La presente tesi si propone di indagare le principali problematiche inerenti al tributo, imposto ai Locresi di madrepatria, di inviare due vergini per servire presso il tempio di Atena ad Ilio. Dopo un’analisi delle fonti antiche attraverso le quali la pratica è nota, si tenta una ricostruzione storica del tributo, prestando particolare attenzione all’annualità dell’avvicendamento delle vergini ed ai termini d’inizio, sospensione e cessazione del tributo stesso. L’ultima parte del lavoro, infine, affronta la questione dell’interpretazione del rituale, che oscilla tra quella di un rito del pharmakòs e di un rito di passaggio.
