The Vita sanctae Heliae is a Christian work centred on the defence of virginity, which is densely interwoven throughout with biblical and literary references. The work's protagonist is Helia, a young girl who from her early youth decides to lead a life in chastity. However, her virginal intention is hindered by her mother, who wants her daughter to marry. The two women thus engage in a heated debate in which the girl brings arguments in support of virginity, while her mother brings arguments in support of marriage. The work uses a mixed Bible, and shows influences from authors such as Ambrose and Jerome. Conceived as a rhetorical exercise, the Life is distinguished by its dialogical structure and the balance between defending virginity and respecting marriage.
