This thesis aims to examine the phenomenon of tourism in a broad context, analyzing its origins and historical evolution up to the present day. The first chapter will be dedicated to understanding this phenomenon, delving into its roots and development over time. It will begin with a reflection on the evolution of tourism, ultimately leading to the modern definition of the concept. Subsequently, various types of tourism will be explored, with particular attention to international tourism. The current state of the sector will also be presented, along with an analysis of its recent developments and a specific focus on the growing importance of sustainable tourism. In the second chapter, the focus will shift to tourist destinations, starting with a clear definition of the concept and analyzing the key factors that determine tourist flows. The life cycle of a destination will also be examined, exploring how a place can evolve over time and become a well-established tourist destination. A significant portion of the thesis will be dedicated to the management and organization of tourist destinations. The mechanisms of complex tourism management will be examined, with particular emphasis on the roles of stakeholders and the organization of the tourism supply chain. The key objectives for a sustainable tourist destination will also be discussed, including tourist satisfaction, product quality, profit optimization, and the promotion of sustainable tourism practices. Furthermore, tools for management and marketing will be analyzed, with a focus on concepts such as DMO (Destination Management Organization), DMP (Destination Management Plan), and marketing strategies. The third chapter will introduce the Northern Territory, providing an overview of its historical, political, geographical, and tourism-related context, as it represents the broader area in which the specific destination under analysis, Kakadu National Park, is located. The chapter will offer general insights into the Territory, with particular focus on its governance and the organizations involved in the management and promotion of tourism. This section will serve as an introduction to the following chapter, which will explore both the general and tourism context of Kakadu National Park. The discussion will conclude with a series of proposals and solutions aligned with the characteristics of the territory, its resources, and the objectives outlined in the Kakadu National Park Management Plan 2016–2026 and the Tourism Master Plan 2020–2030.
