This thesis explores the phenomenon of code-switching in Italian-Spanish bilingual children, with a specific focus on the observation of a three-and-a-half-year-old girl raised in a bilingual environment. The first chapter provides a theoretical framework on bilingualism, including key definitions and major theories of language acquisition, with particular attention to code-switching and its relevance in child language development. It also addresses the specific interaction between two typologically similar languages, Italian and Spanish. The second chapter outlines the methodology used, which includes naturalistic observation in daily contexts, interviews and questionnaires administered to the parents, and qualitative analysis of conversations in both formal and informal settings, all framed within the child's sociocultural context. The third chapter presents the data analysis, highlighting the dynamics of code-switching and the factors influencing its frequency and nature, such as cognitive, affective, social, and emotional aspects. The aim of this work is to contribute to a deeper understanding of early bilingualism and the linguistic strategies children use to navigate two language systems simultaneously.
La presente tesi esplora il fenomeno del code-switching nei bambini bilingui italiano-spagnolo, con un focus specifico sull’osservazione di una bambina di tre anni e mezzo cresciuta in un contesto bilingue. Nel primo capitolo, si offre una panoramica teorica sul bilinguismo, analizzando le principali definizioni e teorie sull’acquisizione linguistica, con particolare attenzione al code-switching e alla sua rilevanza nello sviluppo linguistico infantile. Viene inoltre considerata la specificità dell'interazione tra due lingue tipologicamente simili come l’italiano e lo spagnolo. Il secondo capitolo illustra la metodologia adottata, che include l’osservazione naturalistica in contesti quotidiani, la somministrazione di interviste e questionari ai genitori e l’analisi qualitativa delle conversazioni in ambiti formali e informali, inserendo il tutto nel contesto socioculturale della bambina. Il terzo capitolo presenta i risultati dell’analisi dei dati raccolti, evidenziando le dinamiche del code-switching e i fattori che ne influenzano la frequenza e la natura, come quelli cognitivi, affettivi, sociali ed emotivi. L’obiettivo del lavoro è contribuire alla comprensione del bilinguismo precoce e delle strategie linguistiche adottate dai bambini per gestire due sistemi linguistici in parallelo.
