The thesis “Artificial Intelligence: the use of ChatGPT in writing a graduation thesis” aims to analyze the limits and difficulties of using artificial intelligence, in particular ChatGPT-4o, in academic writing. The main objective of this thesis is to understand whether it is possible to write a degree thesis in Communication using exclusively ChatGPT, and what are the strengths, weaknesses and limits of ChatGPT that can emerge during this process. To do so, the drafting and complete writing of a “fictitious” thesis was simulated on a topic assigned by my supervisor based on a degree thesis written a few years ago: “Videogames and the market of skins and additional components”. The entire drafting and writing process was entrusted to ChatGPT, which generated index, chapters, paragraphs, contents, citations and bibliography. During the work, all the steps were observed and documented, evaluating the quality of the texts produced, the coherence of the contents, the use of academic language, and the management of the sources. This research takes into account different aspects: the technical knowledge needed to use ChatGPT, the different versions of ChatGPT and their differences, the possibility of producing a coherent and well-structured text, the degree of originality of the contents, the potential difficulties that the user may have in writing complex texts. The research also focuses on the problematic aspects of using AI, such as conceptual errors, structural inconsistencies, difficulties in citing sources and the risk of plagiarism. The final goal is to reflect on how much tools such as ChatGPT can represent a risk of plagiarism in academic writing and whether, in the end, their use brings more disadvantages than benefits.
La tesi “Intelligenza artificiale: l'uso di ChatGPT per la scrittura di una tesi di laurea” mira di analizzare i limiti e le difficoltà dell’utilizzo dell’intelligenza artificiale, in particolare ChatGPT-4o, nella scrittura accademica. L’obiettivo principale di questa tesi è capire se sia possibile scrivere una tesi di laurea in Comunicazione usando esclusivamente ChatGPT, e quali sono i punti forti, punti deboli e limiti di ChatGPT che possono emergere durante questo percorso. Per farlo, è stata simulata la stesura e scrittura completa di una tesi “fittizia” su un argomento assegnato dal mio relatore basato su una tesi di laurea fatta qualche anno fa: “Videogiochi e il mercato di skin e componenti aggiuntive”. L’intero processo della stesura e scrittura è stato affidato a ChatGPT, che ha generato indice, capitoli, paragrafi, contenuti, citazioni e bibliografia. Durante il lavoro, sono stati osservati e documentati tutti i passaggi, valutando la qualità dei testi prodotti, la coerenza dei contenuti, l’uso del linguaggio accademico, e la gestione delle fonti. Questa ricerca prende in considerazione aspetti diversi: le conoscenze tecniche necessarie per usare ChatGPT, le diverse versioni di ChatGPT e le loro differenze, la possibilità di realizzare un testo coerente e ben strutturato, il grado di originalità dei contenuti, le potenziali difficoltà che utente può avere nella scrittura dei testi complessi. La ricerca si concentra anche sugli aspetti problematici dell’utilizzo dell’IA, come errori concettuali, incoerenze strutturali, difficoltà nella citazione delle fonti e rischio di plagio. L’obiettivo finale è riflettere su quanto strumenti come ChatGPT possano rappresentare un rischio di plagio nella scrittura accademica e se, alla fine, il loro utilizzo porti più svantaggi che benefici.
