This text presents a research study aimed at exploring how written dialogue with ChatGPT is perceived as real or not by university students (M, F, non-binary) studying in Italy and speaking Italian. The sample includes individuals between the ages of 18 and 30. “Real” is defined as the perceived degree of overlap between a conversation with ChatGPT and one with another human being. Before discussing the research findings, several key concepts are explored: human thought and reasoning in Cognitive Psychology, the notions of learning and human-machine interaction. An overview is also provided of how Artificial Intelligence works, with a focus on LLMs and ChatGPT.
