This thesis deals with the study of thermo-hydraulic processes that develop within river embankments in transient regime, with particular reference to filtration phenomena and their influence on hydraulic defense works. The main objective of the work is the numerical modeling on the hydraulic and thermal plane of a section of embankment body in order to reproduce the real behavior of the same. The site under study is located along the right bank of the Adige River, in correspondence with the town of Salorno (BZ), in a section characterized by previous siphoning events that led to the construction of a jet grouting diaphragm wall. The availability of experimental data, acquired through traditional sensors and thermometric monitoring through distributed fiber optics, allowed to calibrate and validate the realized model thus making it a useful tool to make predictions, further analysis, and considerations on the future behavior of the embankment. The work carried out is part of a broader line of research oriented toward the characterization of preferential filtration pathways and the integration of modeling and field monitoring.

The availability of experimental data, acquired through traditional sensors and thermometric monitoring through distributed fiber optics, allowed to calibrate and validate the realized model thus making it a useful tool to make predictions, further analysis, and considerations on the future behavior of the embankment.
