This thesis examines the practical evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) within the Italian space economy, showcasing how this technology is transforming every phase of space missions: from design and manufacturing to launch operations and satellite data analysis. Leveraging its strong aerospace heritage, Italy is strategically investing in AI integration through government initiatives, international collaborations, and the efforts of innovative companies. Through real-world examples, the thesis outlines where and how work is currently being done to make AI a tangible driver of competitiveness and growth in the Italian space sector. The final part offers an overview of technical challenges and emerging opportunities, providing recommendations to further strengthen the national ecosystem.
Questa tesi esplora l’evoluzione pratica dell’intelligenza artificiale (IA) nel contesto della space economy italiana, evidenziando come questa tecnologia stia rivoluzionando ogni fase delle missioni spaziali: dalla progettazione alla produzione, dal lancio all’elaborazione dei dati satellitari. L’Italia, forte di una solida tradizione aerospaziale, sta investendo in maniera strategica nell’integrazione dell’IA grazie a iniziative governative, collaborazioni internazionali e all’impegno di aziende innovative. Attraverso esempi concreti, viene analizzato dove e come si sta lavorando nel presente per rendere l’IA una leva concreta di competitività e sviluppo per il settore spaziale italiano. La tesi offre infine una panoramica sulle sfide tecniche e le opportunità, con raccomandazioni per rafforzare ulteriormente l’ecosistema nazionale.
