L'EVOLUZIONE DELLA "STREGA": DAI PROCESSI ALLE STREGHE DI SALEM ALLA NARRATIVA CONTEMPORANEA PER ADOLESCENTI E GIOVANI ADULTI

This thesis explores the evolution of the image of the witch from the historical context of the Salem Witch Trials to re-interpretation in modern Young Adult fiction. It examines the socio-political context which led to the creation of the witch, as a moral and social threat, in Salem’s Puritan society, in contrast with the positive representation of witches in Young Adults' fiction. Through comparative literary analysis, the thesis reveals how the witch evolved from oppressed victim to feminist icon. This change reveals not only how cultural ideals on gender and identity shifted throughout the centuries but also how these characters became important means in the diffusion of messages about female empowerment and emancipation.

Questa tesi esplora l'evoluzione dell'immagine della strega dal contesto storico del processo alle streghe di Salem alla reinterpretazione nella moderna narrativa per giovani adulti. Esamina il contesto socio-politico che ha portato alla creazione della strega, come minaccia morale e sociale, nella società puritana di Salem, in contrasto con la rappresentazione positiva delle streghe nella narrativa per giovani adulti. Attraverso un'analisi letteraria comparata, la tesi rivela come la strega si sia evoluta da vittima oppressa a icona femminista. Questo cambiamento rivela non solo come gli ideali culturali sul genere e sull'identità si siano modificati nel corso dei secoli, ma anche come questi personaggi siano diventati mezzi importanti per la diffusione di messaggi sull'emancipazione e sul potere femminile.
