The thesis analyzes one of the first tragedies of William Shakespeare, Titus Andronicus, investigating its origins, critical decline and subsequent revaluation. The first chapter explores the classical sources, from Seneca to Ovid, which influenced the writing of the play and the historical and cultural context of Elizabethan England where the work came to life, with particular attention to its early stage performances. The second chapter examines the reasons behind the long critical decline of Titus Andronicus, due to changing aesthetic tastes and severe judgments expressed by eighteenth-century critics, which led to the marginalization of the play in the Shakespearean canon. The third chapter is dedicated to the rediscovery and revaluation of the play in the twentieth century, through new theatrical productions and film adaptations, which have helped restore dignity and relevance to the drama. The overall analysis highlights how Titus Andronicus, long considered a minor work, has become a crucial text for the reception of Shakespeare and the dynamics of modern theatre.
La tesi analizza una delle prime tragedie di William Shakespeare, Titus Andronicus, indagandone la genesi, il declino critico e la successiva rivalutazione. Nel primo capitolo si esplorano le fonti classiche, da Seneca a Ovidio, che hanno influenzato la scrittura del dramma e il contesto storico e culturale dell’Inghilterra elisabettiana in cui l’opera prese vita, con particolare attenzione alle prime rappresentazioni teatrali. Il secondo capitolo esamina le cause del lungo declino critico del Titus Andronicus, dovuto al mutare dei gusti estetici e ai severi giudizi espressi dai critici del XVIII secolo, che portarono alla marginalizzazione del testo nel canone shakespeariano. Il terzo capitolo è dedicato alla riscoperta e alla rivalutazione dell’opera nel Novecento, attraverso nuove messe in scena teatrali e adattamenti cinematografici, che hanno contribuito a restituire dignità e rilevanza al dramma. L’analisi complessiva evidenzia come Titus Andronicus, a lungo considerato un'opera minore, sia diventato un testo cruciale per la ricezione di Shakespeare e le dinamiche del teatro moderno.
