VALIE EXPORT is an important figure in Body Art, performance art, and Expanded Art and Cinema, active during a period of social and political struggles for the liberation of the female body from the constructs of a patriarchal society. This thesis aims to focus on her work by analyzing her major performances, her photographic production, together with her short films and feature films, maintaining a consistent thread based on her vision and her relationship with the female body and the inner self. It also proposes an in-depth examination of her personal thought and her connections with the artistic movements and tendencies that were spreading during the 1960s and 1970s. The first chapter focuses on the artist’s biography and her critical thought. The second explores her contact with Wiener Aktionismus, through which she became one of the leading exponents of Feminist Actionism; the second part of the chapter then addresses her early performances. Finally, the last chapter is dedicated to the concepts of Expanded Art and Expanded Cinema, presenting the most significant examples.
