The aim of this thesis is to explore the potential of leisure activities as tools for promoting well-being and social relationships within community contexts, with particular reference to communities of practice and the young adult population. In light of recent social transformations (such as the weakening of community ties and the increase in post-pandemic psychological distress), the need emerges for systemic and participatory approaches to mental health, capable of enhancing the role of collective experiences. Through a review of the scientific literature, the thesis analyses the characteristics and benefits of leisure activities, investigating the psychological and social mechanisms through which they affect individual and community well-being. Some participatory intervention models are also examined, including participatory action research and Community-Based Participatory Research, which integrate the relational and transformative dimensions of recreational activities. Finally, the focus is on young adults, the role of leisure time in identity development and the building of meaningful social bonds. Participation in shared leisure practices represents a concrete opportunity to strengthen a sense of belonging, promote inclusion and prevent psychosocial distress. It is hoped that, in the future, barriers to access will be overcome and that interventions will be co-designed in a more inclusive and context-sensitive manner.
