Cu(I) compounds have been largely used as biocide in naval antifouling paints in the last decade. These compounds represent a valide alternative to TBT-based paints, which are dangerous for the marine ecosystems. In this project we studied the effects of the Cu(I)-based biocide on egg fertilization and larval development of the sea urchin Parcentrotus lividus. We used fertility tests and larval development tests in which eggs and embryos were exposed to 4 different Cu(I) concentration similar to those found in certain regions of the Mediterranean sea. In larval development tests we analyzed the embryos after 48 hours and we registered the larval stages composition as well as the presence of abnormal pluteus. We also studied the effect of 6 different Cu(I)-based self polishing paints on larval development
