Mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum contact sites (MERCs) are regions where the two organelles are in close proximity and mediate many subcellular processes. While the effect of chemical compounds on MERCs is already being explored, little is known about that of physical agents. In this thesis, we investigate if and how ultraviolet radiation (UV) induces alterations in MERCs morphology, by analysing images obtained with transmission electron microscopy. We then compare our results with those in the current literature to establish whether chemical and physical stimuli can exert similar effects or if certain chemical compounds can be used to modulate the stress caused by UV radiation.

Abstract
Mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum contact sites (MERCs) are regions where the two organelles are in close proximity and mediate many subcellular processes. While the effect of chemical compounds on MERCs is already being explored, little is known about that of physical agents. In this thesis, we investigate if and how ultraviolet radiation (UV) induces alterations in MERCs morphology, by analysing images obtained with transmission electron microscopy. We then compare our results with those in the current literature to establish whether chemical and physical stimuli can exert similar effects or if certain chemical compounds can be used to modulate the stress caused by UV radiation.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
