Synchrotron X-ray microfluorescence (SXRF) analysis revealed variations in the concentrations of certain chemical elements within the tree rings of a Juniperus communis L. collected in Finland. The aim of the study was to identify enrichment peaks in chemical elements, particularly Fe, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Ni, which are moderately volatile elements that can be present in fairly high quantities within the plumes of the most energetic volcanic eruptions (with a sufficiently high VEI). Therefore, chemical spikes of these elements within the wood, corresponding to tree rings of known age, can be used to date volcanic eruptions. Dendrochronological analysis provided the age of the juniper, which ranges from 800 CE to 1401 CE. Perhaps the most significant result of the work was the identification of the chemical signal of the eruption of Eldgjá (Iceland, Katla volcano) highlighted by a clear increase in concentration of the elements listed above in correspondence with the rings of the mid-10th century.

Abstract
Perhaps the most significant result of the work was the identification of the chemical signal of the eruption of Eldgjá (Iceland, Katla volcano) highlighted by a clear increase in concentration of the elements listed above in correspondence with the rings of the mid-10th century.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
