There are numerous emergency situations in which the intervention of Search And Rescue (SAR) teams becomes essential, especially in life-threatening scenarios. The integration of drones into Search and Rescue operations represents a significant breakthrough in a field that would otherwise operate almost entirely on the ground. This thesis examines this technology by highlighting its advantages and limitations, exploring various methods of application, identifying the most favorable contexts for its use, and outlining potential areas for further development. The work is divided into three main sections. The first chapter provides an overview of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), with a particular focus on their deployment in SAR missions, and presents some relevant case studies. The second chapter concentrates on Sensing, a method for locating missing persons through wireless signals, it analyzes different systems, comparing them to emphasize their distinctive features, and illustrates potential operational scenarios. The third chapter adopts a forward-looking perspective, discussing the principal areas of progress in which technological advancements may give rise to increasingly sophisticated systems and facilitate their wider adoption.
Sono molteplici le situazioni d'emergenza in cui si rende necessario l'intervento di team di ricerca e soccorso, soprattutto quando si presentano scenari rischiosi per la vita. L'integrazione di droni nei team di Search and Rescue (SAR) rappresenta una svolta significativa in un settore che altrimenti opererebbe quasi interamente via terra. Il presente elaborato si pone l'obiettivo di analizzare questa tecnologia, mettendone in evidenza i vantaggi e gli svantaggi, esplorando diversi metodi di applicazione, le situazioni più favorevoli all'utilizzo ed evidenziandone le aree di sviluppo. Il lavoro è stato suddiviso in tre parti. Il primo capitolo propone una visione panoramica degli Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), con focus sul loro impiego per missioni SAR, e presenta alcuni casi di studio inerenti all'argomento. Il secondo capitolo si focalizza sul Sensing, un metodo di localizzazione di persone disperse tramite segnali wireless, analizzando vari sistemi e confrontandoli tra loro per risaltarne le differenze ed illustrare i possibili scenari operativi. Il terzo capitolo dà uno sguardo al futuro, concentrandosi sui principali settori di progresso, dove l'avanzamento tecnologico potrebbe dar luogo a sistemi sempre più all'avanguardia e promuoverne l'utilizzo.
